Observatory about Agrarian Conflicts

A Simple Yet Powerful Tool for Visualizing Agrarian Conflicts for Via Campesina - International Peasant Movement

Observatory for Agrarian Conflicts I was approached by Central American activists from La Via Campesina to develop a straightforward yet effective online observatory for agrarian conflicts. The website, which went live on the International Day of Peasant’s Struggle, was designed to be a potent tool in fostering global solidarity among peasants, landless, women farmers, and rural youth.

Using Drupal, I was able to swiftly create a platform that not only stores essential data but also visualizes these significant incidents. The conflicts within the region are prominently displayed on a map. For this, we utilized the mapping solutions from Mapbox, ensuring an aesthetically appealing map and integrating geographical data from the OpenStreetMap project.

A key feature of the observatory is its interactive map, allowing users to visually browse through the various conflicts reported in the region. This visual representation not only makes the data more accessible but also helps in conveying the gravity and scale of these conflicts more effectively.

In the next phase of the project, we plan to enhance the platform by adding functionalities that allow the public to export information about these conflicts. All the data on the website is provided under a free and open license, ensuring its accessibility and reuse for related purposes.

This initiative represents a significant step in using digital tools for advocacy and awareness-raising in the context of global agrarian issues. The observatory is poised to become an essential resource for activists, researchers, and policymakers engaged in the struggle for peasant rights and land justice.
